THE OBJECTIVE:
Municipality
of Princeton
Project Type: Public Design & Brand Identity Development

Collaborated with the Municipality of Princeton to reimagine its public-facing communications through design that prioritises accessibility, clarity, and community engagement. The project included developing a refreshed brand identity, cohesive signage systems, and print and digital materials that reflected the town’s heritage while aligning with modern design standards.

Once the separate Township and Borough of Princeton, the community officially became one Municipality in January 2013. The new municipality sought to unify its visual identity across departments and public touchpoints. The goal was to create a design system that felt approachable, functional, and representative of Princeton’s community character — balancing institutional professionalism with local warmth, giving Princeton residents a cohesive identity to adhere to that did not strip residents of both the previous Township and Borough of their individuality.
THE PROCESS:
I began by analysing existing communications and identifying inconsistencies in tone, typography, and layout. The redesign process focused on:
-
Developing a clean and adaptable visual identity.
-
Introducing a cohesive colour palette inspired by Princeton’s architecture and natural landscape, whilst integrating the municipality's existing seal.
-
Designing accessible print and digital templates for reports, community notices, and campaigns.
-
Creating signage and wayfinding systems to improve public navigation and visibility.
Each element was guided by the principle of design as public service — making information easier to read, navigate, and trust.
THE OUTCOME:
The new brand system improved visual consistency across municipal communications, reduced design turnaround times, and helped staff implement cohesive design standards internally. Residents responded positively to the updated materials, which made information more legible, recognisable, and inviting.
